Simple Steps for a Spring Refresh
Refresh your home this spring our selection of expert design tips.
Begin your seasonal refresh with these handpicked principles inspired by The Interior Design Handbook.
Triangle Principle
Designers often use the triangle principle to create flow and visual balance. This involves arranging household items so that their outline forms a triangle, whether through larger pieces such as sofas, cabinets, and lamps, or smaller items such as vases, paperweights, and stationery.
This type of arrangement naturally guides the eye from one object to the next, creating a sense of harmony and flow.
Collate Pieces in Odd Numbers
Odd numbers are often used in interior design as they are more visually engaging than even-numbered groupings. Working alongside the triangle principle, consider arranging candles of varying sizes or stacking books neatly on a coffee table.
You can also combine three or more items with different purposes, such as a paperweight, a vase, and a pen holder.
Choose Floor Patterns Wisely
Pattern placement can help change how the proportions of a space are perceived. If altering the flooring is not possible, or you want to experiment with an idea, a well-chosen rug can achieve a similar effect.
Use horizontal stripes to make the room appear wider
Use lengthways stripes to make the room feel longer and narrower
Use a large checkerboard-style squares to emphasise the size of the room and create a more grounded, cosy atmosphere
Have a stable anchor
An anchor is the central piece of furniture that gives a room purpose. Every room benefits from having one. A kitchen may centre around a dining table, a bedroom around the bed, and a home office around a desk or bookcase.
Once the anchor is established, the rest of the room can be arranged around it to create balance and cohesion.
Use symmetry
In interior design, symmetry involves mirroring elements around a central axis to create a balanced, orderly, and tranquil environment. These elements may include furniture, lighting, or décor. A classic example is a bed flanked by matching bedside tables, lamps, and rugs.
By using pairs of furniture and décor, you can establish a sense of order and stability within a room.
A seasonal refresh does not require a complete redesign. By applying simple design principles such as balance, symmetry, and thoughtful placement, small adjustments can transform how a space feels.
Spring offers the perfect opportunity to step back, reassess your surroundings, and allow your home to evolve with the season.
